"Armed agents dressed in pink and wearing masks with the symbols ○, △, and ☐ are the iconic facilitators of Squid Game. These symbols appear to be inspired by the childhood game of squid, representing basic shapes drawn on the ground during the game, and they symbolize order and hierarchy in the drama.
In an interview a day before the show's premiere, Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of Squid Game, acknowledged that the show was inspired by works such as Gambling Apocalypse Kaiji, Liar Game, and Battle Royale. These Japanese survival game manga and novels seem to have influenced the structure and tone of Squid Game. However, Squid Game has a unique twist that sets it apart from other death game genre works. If more than half of the participants agree, the game can be stopped, allowing them to safely return to society without being eliminated or harmed.
Netflix initially had reservations about the title Squid Game. Since Squid Game was not a widely known game even within South Korea, Netflix was concerned that the title wouldn’t resonate with the audience. They suggested changing the title to Round 6, but Director Hwang Dong-hyuk insisted on keeping Squid Game, emphasizing that the essence of the show lies in the game of squid."
