​Although the film adaptation of 26 Years was in development for a prolonged period of 26 years, the production process faced numerous challenges. The sensitive subject matter and themes of the original work made production particularly difficult. During the early planning stages, the movie was tentatively titled 29 Years, three years after the original webtoon’s serialization. However, the title eventually reverted to 26 Years, matching the original work, and the film was released under this name.​
