Additional Info.
Black Rubber Shoes is set in the late 1960s, during South Korea's economic development under President Park Chung-hee. In one episode, Ki-cheol, along with other children in the neighborhood, teases a mixed-race child, calling him a "black kid." His grandmother even uses the term "mutt" to ridicule the child further. Eventually, Ki-cheol's mother scolds him for his actions. This was a time of recovery after the war when societal attitudes toward mixed-race individuals and those with disabilities were harsh. Black Rubber Shoes portrays the realities of the era and should be understood within the context of its time rather than judged by modern standards.
