​The story follows Dong-ha, a college lecturer who, despite being a model citizen, faces bankruptcy and the threat of divorce. His life takes a turn when he accidentally comes into possession of a large sum of money from a drug organization. In order to save his family from danger, Dong-ha decides to become a drug mule, which leads him to become entangled with the criminal organization.​

​Model Family depicts the story of an ordinary family becoming entangled in drug trafficking, with frequent comparisons drawn to the American drama Ozark. Ozark follows a family involved in laundering money for a cartel, showing how its seemingly ordinary characters become immersed in crime. However, Kim Jin-woo, the director of Model Family, clarified that he has never watched Ozark. He explained that any similarities between the two works are purely coincidental and stem from their shared subject matter.​
