​As a child, Hani lost her mother to illness and became an orphan. After her mother’s death, her father began dating an actress named Yoo Ji-ae. He sold the house full of memories of Hani and her mother and moved to the Middle East. Feeling betrayed, Hani closed herself off emotionally. Running became her only solace, and a teacher named Hong Du-kae, recognizing her talent, recruited her to the track and field team. Thus begins Hani’s journey of growth as a female athlete.​

​The Run Hani we know is actually a combination of 1988's Run Hani and 1989's Cheeky Hani. In Run Hani, Hani was a track and field athlete, while in Cheeky Hani, she became a gymnast. The former emphasized persistence and courage, reflecting the nature of athletics, whereas the latter highlighted the graceful beauty of gymnastics. Although the characters and circumstances differ, both works depict Hani's determined personality, which helps her overcome hardships and adversity.​
